Set apart a night for you
When we first entered into this veterinary school journey in 2019, we were told to set apart one night a week for just us. We chose Fridays. Fridays worked well because, by the end of the week, Ty was usually ready to take a study break. We also have made time for church and Bible studies.
Remember your spouse chose YOU to tag along on this journey
As the spouse of a student, you may often tell yourself that your husband or wife doesn't need any distractions ever. While it is true that they need a lot of time without distractions, this doesn't mean you can't talk to them if needed. My husband had to remind me early on that he values me before school (that's a big deal)! Sometimes you will have something you need to share with him or her and that's okay.
Realize you will probably do most of the household chores
The first two years of vet school are crazy, while the last two years may have a little more free time. Your spouse may not have time to do all of the household chores that need to be done. During our marriage, Ty usually always puts up the laundry. He'll do other things, but those aren't as often. I try to remind myself that one of my main jobs as a wife is to support my husband. I will ask him to help out with things occasionally and he's always willing to help out.
Don't be resentful about the financial issue
Most likely, the veterinary student is not working, or at least not as much as you. Plus, you're probably having to take out student loans. Remember school is only 4 years, and once it's done, your spouse will have a job and it will help ease the financial burden off of you and your marriage.
Have friends outside of school
It's likely that over the years you will both become friends with his or her classmates. However, it is nice to have friends and a community that is not centered around school. We have been blessed by an amazing group of friends who go to church with us.
BONUS:
This is mainly for the ladies. If your husband is in vet school, you must accept the fact that he will spend hours studying and working with other women. Veterinary schools are female-dominated, so it's very likely that your husband will be paired into groups with multiple female students. Over the years, I've become friends with a lot of my husband's school friends. I know my husband talks about me with his friends often and I occasionally bake them cookies so they like me. ;)
